Welcome Back!  A message from the Principal

September is upon us and we are all set to begin the 2014/2015 school year. I am excited as we get ready to welcome returning and new families and students to Pierce Middle School.
Pierce offers a multitude of support for our families and students - including an experienced teaching staff (and some new, enthusiastic teachers).  Pierce offers intervention classes tailored to each child's individual needs (Focus), an outstanding support staff, counselors, social workers, academic coaches and Title I Parapros.  Our departments work hard to ensure a sound and challenging curriculum. The PAI and our new Honors classes meet the needs of our high-achieving kids. Our A & E teachers offer a variety of experiences to children, and help to create a balanced and well-rounded child. In addition, the A & E and intervention teachers are committed to ensuring our students are given rewards for positive behavior and held accountable for misbehavior by helping to manage the lunchtime rewards and detention. Pierce's clerical staff works tirelessly so the school runs smoothly and efficiently (it would certainly be a mess without them).  The custodians, monitors and transportation staff are also instrumental in keeping our building and busses safe, clean and accessible to all.  Pierce also is proud to have a school-based health clinic on-site, operated by Botsford Health Care.
I anticipate an amazing year. Sure, we will have our challenges, but there is nothing that will stop us as we strive to improve our academic achievement, student motivation and student behavior. We are a great team with a growth mindset, and by working together and continuing to communicate openly we will certainly see the results we hope for!  Thank you so much for your commitment to our students, our families, and our school.

Please stop by Pierce or contact us if you have any questions, thoughts, ideas or needs. I am looking forward to working with you and your child.

Meet the New Assistant Principal - Tuesday, September 16

Please join us from 5 p.m to 6 p.m. to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Eddie Latour.  The Meet-n-Greet will take place in the Media Center, and Mr Latour will be available for you to meet with and talk to. Our former AP, Mr. Justice, transferred to Thurston High School.  Mr. Latour has been a teacher at Pierce Middle School for several years, and is well-known and highly respected by many South Redford families and the Pierce staff. He has held many leadership roles prior to this position, including running the elementary summer school program and working as the coordinator for Soar Academic Institute – South Redford’s blended online learning program.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please join us to welcome him in this new role.

PTO Meeting

The first PTO meeting will follow the Meet and Greet for the new Assistant Principal, and runs from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Come for one or both events.

Pierce Academic Institute – for students who love to learn!

The PAI, a rigorous high school preparatory program, was founded in order to advance the education of our students through a high-quality public education middle school.  It is the aim of the faculty at Pierce to impart to our students a solid educational background that will positively affect their lives in and out of the classroom. The PAI will challenge high-performing students daily.

A quality education at Pierce begins with the fundamentals of Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. This has been the key to academic success at Pierce since 1950 and will remain as the stronghold of our core values. The PAI hosts a complete series of classes in these core academic areas that will prepare our students for the corresponding Honors/Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Thurston High School. Students will have the opportunity to earn high school credit while in middle school, and will be on track to earn college credits while taking high school classes, without tuition fees!
